National Grandparent’s Day is this Sunday

By teresak · Sep 09, 2010 · Comments (0)

In 1978 President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day National Grandparent’s Day. In 1978 I was in my early 20’s. I probably didn’t even notice his declaration, but I always loved and respected my grandparents.

When I was young I thought everyone grew up with a mom and a dad in the house and loving grandparents right down the road. When I went to college I found out that wasn’t the case.

One of the goals of NanaHood is to connect the generations. It really does take a village to raise a child and parents need all the help and support they can get. Another goal is to remind grandparents (and moms and dads) of the positive difference a supportive grandparent can make in the life of a child. In my case it was my maternal grandmother who taught me so many life lessons with her kindness, gentle spirit and patience.

If you are lucky enough to still have your grandparents (near or far) if you can, go visit them. If not, call them this Sunday or send a card. I know they will appreciate it!

Blessings to each of you, dear readers!

Wake Up With A Cup of Coffee

By teresak · Sep 08, 2010 · Comments (2)

My mom used to say her heart didn’t start beating well in the mornings until she had consumed her cup of coffee. She always put a little milk and sugar in it, stirred and sipped slowly. She wasn’t a morning person and she didn’t want to talk to anyone until after she’d had her breakfast (coffee and toast) and her bath (never a shower).

I drink two or three cups . I drink it black and tend to gulp, then I take a quick shower and grab a Pop Tart on my way out the door. I can speak coherently in the mornings, but I usually don’t have time to talk to anyone because I’m always late.

My husband, on the other hand, doesn’t require nearly as much sleep and can go and go on just a few hours and several cups of coffee. He’s always the navigator on our trips, even while the rest of snooze.

Over the years Bill and I have had many different kinds of coffee makers and we have managed to wear them all out. This morning our Bunn Brewer bit the dust. They just don’t make them to last anymore, do they?

I didn’t drink coffee until I was in college. Then I learned that if I had some in the morning I could get dressed and get to my eight o’clock on the other end of the campus and be awake when I got there!

My mom was a one cup girl and my dad abhorred java. I’m not sure why, but he was convinced it wasn’t good for you. Over the years there have been studies that said he was right. Too much caffeine is a bad thing, they say. And then another study would come along proving just the opposite. What’s a girl to do?

I’ll tell you what this gal is going to do. It’s morning. I’m tired. I’m going to go battle with the Bunn and see if I can’t coax at least one more cup of coffee out of it!

Giving Thanks for Man’s Best Friend

By teresak · Sep 07, 2010 · Comments (3)

We love dogs. It’s obvious. Come to our house and you will probably trip over one or two. This past weekend I saw some folks that love their dogs too.

dogs in bbuggyThey brought their “babies” to the parade and they were so well behaved! Our dogs are much bigger and not only would they not fit in a baby buggy, if we put them in one they would definitely jump out.

I have often wondered why dogs are man’s best friend and not womans. I know Marilyn Monroe said diamonds are a girls best friend and I like diamonds, but given the choice….I’d go for the dog.

150 Years of Making Memories

By teresak · Sep 06, 2010 · Comments (1)

If I could dream up the perfect Labor Day weekend it would be this one. Our town turned 150 and what a celebration we had. The weather was perfect. The concerts were great. The reunion at the middle school was well attended. The parade had floats from every decade. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love small towns and I love being a Hornet!

I hope you are making memories with your family this weekend. May God bless you and keep you in His care.

Amen!

Amen!

Nana and Poppa Rocking on the Square

By teresak · Sep 04, 2010 · Comments (1)

My little town is celebrating it’s 150th birthday and last night we had a concert on the square. The Kentucky Headhunters and Black Stone Cherry played. The weather was perfect and the concert couldn’t have been better. We are so proud of our hometown boys!

Our town is really small, so to see a huge crowd and a band on the square was a real treat. Here’s a short video clip to show you how much fun we had!
