Grandparents Day is Coming!

I loved my grandparents dearly and they had a positive influence on my life. So I wasn’t surprised by the results of a study done at Brigham Young University that found that children in both two-parent and single-parent homes who felt close to at least one grandparent had what they called “higher pro-social behavior” both at the time of the study and a year later.

The gist of the article is that it’s healthy for children to spend some time with grandparents, and that grandparents can and do make a difference in a grandchild’s life.

According to the grandparents interviewed:

72% think being a grandparent is the single most important and satisfying thing in their life

63% say they can do a better job caring for grandchildren than they did with their own

68% think being a grandparent brings them closer to their adult children

90% enjoy talking about their grandkids to just about everyone

Just in case you didn’t know….

Grandparent’s Day is coming up and we all have a chance to do something grand!

Using Grandparents Day (September 9) as a call to action, Generations United is planning a full week (September 8-15) of intergenerational activism.

They are calling this campaign Do Something Grand. And on this website (www.granparentsday.org) you will find resources, ideas and information on ways to get involved.

Finally, if you can visit your grandparents, go visit them. If you can’t, give them a call. AARP and some happy dancers have a really cute video for you reminding you to call your grandparents on Grandparents Day (or any time for that matter). I loved it! Hope you do too!
