NanaHood has a dream too!

Years ago I taught American history at our local high school. I loved teaching about our nation and helping teenagers understand the people and places they read about in their text books. When we read about Martin Luther King Jr. I always made sure we covered his I Have a Dream speech. To me it is one of the best and greatest speeches in history. I especially like the following statement;

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Judging by the content of their character.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the world operated that way? As long as human beings inhabit this planet there will be some who judge others because of skin color, or religion, or social status (and on and on)

The good news is that God can and does judge us on the content of our character. He looks right past the outward appearance and into our hearts.  Remember the story of Jesse and his sons in 1 Samuel in the Bible? You can read it here.

Basically the premise of the story is they were looking for a king among Jesse’s sons and they suggested every son except David, who happened to be the one God wanted.

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

My dream is very similar to Kings, that we don’t judge men (or women) by anything other than what’s in their heart.

What’s your dream?
