Basketball Blues

It’s Saturday and the University of Kentucky is playing the University of North Carolina on national television. All four of my boys are in the den glued to the set and my husband is at the game. There are basketball games and there are basketball games. These two teams are so talented and are both playing like their life depended on it.

Just in case you aren’t from Kentucky, or aren’t a basketball fan (shame on you) the game is being played at Rupp Arena.

According to Wikipedia (which I tell my students not to use but for this purpose it’s okay) …

Rupp Arena is an arena located in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, U.S. Since its opening in 1976, it has been the centerpiece of Lexington Center, a convention and shopping facility owned by an arm of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, and serves as home court to the University of Kentucky men’s basketball program. With an official capacity of 23,500[4][5], it is the largest basketball arena in the United States. In Rupp Arena, the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team annually leads the nation in college basketball attendance. The arena is also host to many concerts, conventions, and shows on a regular basis.

The sad thing is even though this facility was built in 1976, fans have out grown it. Plan are underway to either renovate or rebuild.

I have been a UK fan since I was a little girl. My dad worked 24/7 but there were two things he made time for; church and UK basketball. That’s the way it is in Kentucky.

This is the first season our twins haven’t played basketball since they were toddlers. To say that Bill and I are having withdrawel symptoms would be an understatement. I want to go to some high school games to watch my nephews play, but I’m going to have to work up to it.

You see, first it was Little League, then middle school ball, then high school. In all those years we might have missed a handful of games. We absolutely loved watching our boys run, stuff, dunk, rebound and shoot. For it to all be over in the blink of an eye, is hard.

Even though I can’t make myself go to a high school game just yet, watching UK is a family tradition that we all enjoy. Half time is over so I have to end this post. I would say “Go Big Blue!” but UNC is blue too, so I’ll just say, “Go UK!”
