Oscars for Courage?
“Forget the Oscars,” one of my Facebook friends said, “there should be a special award for my sister’s husband. I have a brother-in-law that fought cancer and won, almost died while at the hospital from a blood clot and now is back on the stage doing what he loves!”
His statement got me to thinking about the Academy Awards.
I didn’t watch to see who won an Oscar Sunday night. I just wasn’t interested, but what if there were a show that gave awards to people like my friend’s brother-in-law….that I would watch.
Awards for facing cancer with courage…
Instead of worrying about who was best dressed and worst dressed, they could focus on folks who are receiving chemo and radiation and then going on with life as best they can.
I can just hear the host of the show now……
“And in the category of Best Cancer Survivor the nominees are …. (Insert your hero or heroines name here)
I’m sure you know who I would give the award to.
And the winner is my cousin, Martha Todd!!!! Breast Cancer Survivor Extraordinaire!
She has fought breast cancer twice before and won. Even though she didn’t want to do it again, she’s back in the ring and fighting like a pro.
This past weekend she went for a jeep ride with husband Glenn and two of her grandchildren.
She had this to say about her jeep ride, “Today Glenn and I took Madi and Austin riding in the jeep with the top off.. (I had to be sure my wig stayed on!) It was a blessing to hear them (grandchildren) giggle in the back. God is good.”
I am so proud of Martha’s A+ attitude and my friend’s brother-in-law, who are fighting (or have fought) cancer with courage. As far as I am concerned, they deserve an award!

It so wonderful to see Martha in a jeep like that. I feel as if I am part of the family where I have been reading about her plight. Thank you for sharing her story and your friends brother-in-law. Instead of people worrying about people like Charlie Sheen or Lindsy Lohan who do have a choice in their lives, these are the people we should think of, especially keep them all in our prayers. These are the courageous stories I love to read about. Teresa: you are such a great advocate of the people you love and the people you do not even know. Keep it up girl. 🙂 hugs
That makes me tear up. I completely agree that there should be awards for all patients that go through a terminal or chronic illness. These are things that are so much more important than whether or not those shoes go with that dress.
