5 Things I Remember About My High School Graduation

I attended a high school graduation last night and wow, did it bring back memories. Do you remember your high school graduation? Here’s what I remember about mine.

1. It was 1974 and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I was going to college but that was it as far as a game plan. The rest of it (my life) just fell into place one small step at a time.

2. It was hot. Not just warm, but sweat-until-you-pass-out hot. The gym wasn’t air conditioned and I don’t remember what I wore beneath my gown but I’m sure it was a church dress, complete with slip and panty hose. My mom always insisted on the slip and panty hose for dress up occasions. I think I got rid of them when I left for college because I haven’t seen them since.

3,My family was there. Bless their hearts, they never missed an important event in my life, not one.  They rearranged their schedules to make sure they didn’t miss a moment of my childhood because just being there says more than a phone call or card ever could.

4. I was one of the tallest people in my class so I was at the back of the line. I was ALWAYS tall. From kindergarten through 12th grade, in every class picture we had made I was in the back row.

5. I cried through the whole thing- from Pomp and Circumstances to the tossing of the hats. As I have said before, I am a sentimental sap. I am physically unable to make it through a graduation, wedding, Hallmark commercial or funeral without tears.

And that, my friends, is about all I remember from my graduation ceremony. I don’t remember the speeches, the members of the school board, the teachers who were there…none of that. Yes, it was 1974 and that was a long time ago but still, surely someone spouted out words of wisdom in a graduation speech?

I must have been too busy sweating in my panty hose to pay much attention.

That’s what I remember….how about you? What stands out in your mind about your high school graduation?

  1. I graduated in 1973. Not overly warm day. If I remember correctly, the principal read a letter that was written for us by our favorite English teacher, Mrs. Lenox. She couldn’t attend but was asked to share wisdom with us. I cried that afternoon, cuz I didn’t know what I was gonna do next. Well, yes, I was going to college….but school was always there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on graduation. My daughter is graduating from college after she finishes her algebra! Score! She watched her graduation on line since it’s in Virginia. Now we pray that she gets a good job soon! :0-

  2. Oh Shelley, how funny! Of course it probably wasn’t funny for the son/daughter of the guy who fell but I remember being a teen and getting uncontrollable giggles. I had a friend that could not control giggles and it was really bad. She had to stop going to the funeral home because she giggled at inappropriate times. Some sort of disorder. Thanks for commenting!

  3. I remember the governor spoke but right before one of my classmates fathers fell down the bleachers because he was so drunk (he wasn’t hurt) and I laughed through the governor’s whole speech (in the front row).
