Thursday Thoughts on The Color Blue

The color blue..

My mother’s favorite color was blue.

I live in Kentucky, which is the Bluegrass state. (I have to tell you though that the grass in my yard isn’t blue. In fact, it isn’t even green right now. It’s mostly brown because it’s so dry here.)

There’s a song about “Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining.”

Elvis had blue suede shoes.

The University of Kentucky Wildcat’s are blue. That’s why we yell, “Go Big Blue!”

We can feel blue if we are sad.

We can listen to the blues if we like jazz music.

When I drive to fast I see blue lights (accompanied by a siren)

But most of us would not look good with blue teeth.

My granddaughter is the exception. She’s even cute when her teeth are blue!

Giving Thanks For NanaHood-The Journey

Oh, the joys of being a nana!

How much do I love grandparenting?

Let me count the ways….

1. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…I love the kisses and hugs.

2. I love the fact that children start out small and grow bigger. I love little feet. Little sticky hands on my mirrors. Every thing is cuter when it’s little.

3. I love the cute things children say and their honesty. Two of Abby’s most recent questions are,  “Nana, why does your elbow skin look so yucky?” and “Nana, why do you like naps so much?”

4. I love their inability to keep secrets. Never tell a small child anything you don’t want their whole class to know.

5. I love being loved by my grandchild.

And I love other people’s grandchildren as well.  My friend Carol had some photos on her FaceBook page that I found irresistibly cute so I asked permission to share them with you.

I should mention that Eme and Luke have a little brother named Noah who is just as adorable as the two older children, but who was not dressed up for the fifties.

Who says you have to wear a poodle skirt or look like Elvis to be cute?

Nana’s Kitchen

Cooler weather makes me want to cook (and eat) more.  Years ago we went to church with a lady who made a delicious dish she called “More.”  She said she called it that because when people ate it they always wanted more.  I had her recipe at one time but lost it. Saturday I searched for it online and found it. It wasn’t called “More,” though.  It’s Mexican Casserole, but it’s the same thing and tastes just as good as I remembered it.

It’s easy and filling. I served it with rolls and some brocolli. Pecan/chocolate pie for dessert.  Yummy!

By the way, you probably didn’t realize it but writing NanaHood can be hazard to your health (at least for clumsy folks!) Last night as I was writing this I got up to go to the bathroom, hung my foot in the computer cord, crashed the computer and myself. Of course I wasn’t worried about me, but I was terrified I’d killed my computer. So far so good. Then, if that wasn’t enough, I sat back down and leaned forward to work some more and the wheels on my desk chair spun out from under me and I ended up in the floor again. Bill came running to my rescue but we were both laughing so hard it took awhile for me to get back in my chair and finish this post. Oh the joys of being clumsy!

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Action

The following prayer is one spoken by Shaun Groves in Kenya. He posted it in his newsletter (which I subscribe to) and it touched my heart. I don’t think he’d mind me sharing it with you. Hope not!  By the way you can meet Shaun at www.shuangroves.com

Thank you for my daily bread. Through me, feed those who are hungry.

Thank you for a body and mind that work. Through me, heal those who are broken.

Thank you for loving me when I was your enemy. Through me, love my enemies.

Thank you that someone told me the story of Christ’s death and resurrection. Through me, tell the world.

Amen.

Isn’t that a beautiful prayer? Thank you, Shaun, and thank you God that Shaun shared the prayer with me.

I pray for the same things and hope to make this prayer a daily one.

Amen.

Delighting in the Beauty of Crocheting

My friend Char is blessed with creative genes. I’m guessing they came from her mom, who is crafty as well. Besides being a wife (Happy Anniversary!) and mom of three young children, Char does all the technical work on NanaHood, runs several sites of her own and does computer work for many different clients. Lately she has a new passion. Crocheting….just wait until you see what Char and her needles can do!

Isn't she precious?

Thanks, Char, for letting me brag on you! I so envy crafty folks. My grandmother tried teaching me to knit and I made several pairs of house shoes but that was many, many years ago. The only needles I ever see now are at the doctor’s office and I run from them (well, jog slowly).

Her infant hats and headbands would be perfect for baby showers… or birthday gifts…  and even Christmas (which IS only 91 days away, you know!)  She makes everything custom to-order, so even if you don’t see something you like in her shop, she can probably make it for you.

And as a special gift to our NanaHood readers, Char is offering a 20% discount on any item in her shop.  Just send a note before ordering, so Char can set up a custom listing for you with your discounted rate!
