Wordless Wednesday (sort of)-Can you still wear your prom dress?

My beautiful aunt and handsome uncle!

My beautiful aunt and handsome uncle!

I can’t, but my Aunt Kate can! She wore this same dress 44 years ago! Aunt Kate…you rock!!!!

FYI-My prom dress was pink with white polka dots. I looked like a walking strawberry milkshake! I got a stomach virus the night of prom, went anyway, got sick, left early. My date got the car stuck in my friend Kim’s front yard. It was pouring rain and the yard was muddy. He  had on a white tux and when he tried to push it out of the mud I tried to help by hitting the gas…well you can guess what happened. We never went out again.

Giving Thanks For Blessings Galore

gratituesdaynov094

Oh my goodness, I am sooo blessed!

When you wake up on Gratituesday and don’t know where to start counting then you know you are blessed!

Here’s a short list….

1. I have so many friends who are fighting health battles and I am so thankful that I have the avenue of prayer and that I can ask for mercy and healing for them.
Praying Hands

2.  Jim Croce had a song that said, “Nobody ever had a rainbow until they had the rain.”  We haven’t had much rain in south central Kentucky lately. The grass has turned brown and hasn’t had to be mowed in weeks. Yesterday it rained. What a blessing! I love the smell of a summer rain!

3. Swimming pools. When it’s this hot even a small pool is fun. Yesterday I got in Abby’s small plastic pool with her. When I did a lot of the water sloshed out, but hey, we had fun. (Sorry, no pictures!)

4. NanaHood. I hope you can tell how much I love blogging, parenting and grandparenting. It is truly a labor of love!

5. Family. There’s just no way I could have imagined how much I would love my family (and that includes my church family, my children’s friends, cousins, nephews, friends, etc.) You are awesome!

6. My seniors….can’t believe my babies are seniors this year! Time doesn’t fly, it goes at rocket speed!

Making Memories (and cupcakes) Monday

mmmbanner2

Need a fun way to spend an afternoon? Try making cupcakes and decorating them with your children or grandchildren.

They are just as much fun to make as they are to eat!

Can you tell which ones Abby decorated?

The one on the left with part of a missing ear was done by Abby. She said she was making it for her Uncle Justin. She handed it to Aunt Ray Ray and said, “I couldn’t help it, Ray Ray. I got hungry and ate part of his ear!”

Did you make any memories this weekend? Hope so!

Skype-sitting Nana

Last night I saw a friend I hadn’t seen in awhile. Of course one of the first things I asked her was “How is your new granddaughter?” She was delighted to give me a report on her eight month old granddaughter and informed me that one of her other daughters is expecting a baby very soon.

“The only thing wrong with being a nana,” she said, “is that my granddaughter is in California and I’m in Kentucky!”

We talked a little more and she told me that from time to time she “Skype-sits” her granddaughter.

“How does that work?” I asked.

“My daughter sits the computer on a table near the baby, where she can see me and I entertain her while my daughter does housework or something nearby.  Of course my granddaughter can’t talk to me yet so it’s pretty intense on my part. I sing, talk, and do anything I can think of to keep her attention. I can usually last 30 minutes. I wonder sometimes if she’ll grow up thinking Nana lives in a box!”

I’d never heard of  “Skype -sitting” your grandchild but it really doesn’t surprise me. My grandmother never touched a computer but today’s grandparent can not only use a computer, they are very adept at social networking.

New research from AARP finds that social networking is more important than ever to older Americans—more than a quarter (27%) of Americans age 50+ use social media websites, with Facebook being the most popular, followed by MySpace, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Other Interesting Survey Findings

*         Forty-nine percent of those 50 to 64, and 40 percent of all adults 50+, consider themselves extremely or very comfortable using the Internet.

*         Facebook is the most popular social networking site for Americans 50+, with 23 percent of survey participants reporting they prefer it—followed by MySpace, LinkedIn and Twitter, all at about 4 percent.

*         Forty-seven percent of adults 50+ originally heard about social networking from a family member other than their spouse, and of those, 70 percent heard about it from a child or grandchild.

*         Among adults 50+ who use social media websites, three-quarters (73 percent) are connected to relatives other than children and grandchildren, three-fifths are connected to their children (62 percent), and one-third (36 percent) are connected to grandchildren.

So how about it readers? How do you use technology to keep in touch with your children or grandchildren?

Thursday Thoughts

I am a sentimental fool. I keep things I know I should give away simply because of the memories. I’ll give you an example.

sweater 001This is my oldest child’s sweater. It’s been in my closet since 1982, the year he out grew it. Maybe someday I’ll have a grandson who can wear it but until then, it’s in my closet and every time I look at it I remember what it was like to be a first time mom and what a sweet feeling it was to have a baby in my arms.

Then there’s my daughter’s blue tutu from her dance recital when she was five years old. She was the tiniest ballerina in her dance class and it was one of the last events my mom was able to attend before she died. I still have the dance program too.

Next is son number two’s little velcro tennis shoes and his ninja tutle doll. I kept the tennis shoes because he literally wore holes through the bottoms of them and when I tried to get him new ones he threw a fit. Those were his favorites. The ninja turtle doll represents one of his phases where he and his cousin would put underwear on their heads (the leg holes were for the eyes) grab a toy sword and become ninja warriors. They would run through the house and yard screaming and doing leg kicks that look like they were caused by muscle spasms.

By the time I got to the twins (babies number 4 and 5) I didn’t have as much time to be sentimental. That’s an understatement. I was in motherhood overdrive. They were born in 1991 and their childhood went so fast I don’t even remember parts of it.

This year my babies will be seniors in high school. Now considering how sentimental I am I shouldn’t have been surprised when I took my granddaughter to see Toy Story 3 and found myself trying to hide my tears behind my 3 D glasses. If you haven’t seen the movie I won’t spoil it for you but if you are a sentimental fool like I am and you have a child who will be a senior in high school this year, you might want to take some tissue.  Andy, the little boy in all the Toy Story movies, has grown up and is going away to college and he’s trying to decide what to do with all the toys he’s outgrown.

Talk about feeling stupid! As we left the movie my granddaughter kept saying, “Nana, why are you crying? What’s wrong?”

How do you explain to a four year old that mothers want their children to grow up but when it happens and its time for them to put their childhood away, it’s hard to let go?

I guess you don’t explain. You let them grow up and discover for themselves.

How about it readers? Do you still have some of your children’s clothes or toys that you look at from time to time and remember? Share your memories with us!
