Friday Randomness

It’s time for another random Friday post.  Every week I feel a bit more “random” and scattered than the week before.  I think it’s because the school year is winding down and spring fever is quickly turning into Summer FEVER (which means I really, really want to be done with schooling).  (I homeschool my 8 year old…I now know what public and private school teachers must feel like come April).

ANYWAY… here is some Friday Random Goodness for you:

  • We did a giveaway for the Ultimate Blog Party over at 5MinutesForMom.com, and realized that we didn’t pick a winner!  SO, the winner of the cards from Hallmark is…. RobynL.
  • Speaking of giveaways, we’re going to try another one! This time, Teresa is giving away a copy of Mozart for a Mother’s Soul (which is gift book with a Mozart CD).  You can read more about the book HERE.  To enter to WIN this, please just leave a comment on this post!
  • I was reading through blog posts at BlogHer this week, and I found this GREAT post about making a simple cardboard box dollhouse. My three year old and I will be making one of these this coming week.  I’m all about simple and fun, and this fits the bill.  Thought you might enjoy checking it out too!
  • Laura, over at HeavenlyHomemakers.com, has a few giveaways going on this week.  You can enter to win a book on going green, a bag of gourmet granola, and even some organic palm oil shortening (for you bakers out there).  If you ARE a baker, and would like healthy recipes for the yummy goodies in your life, Laura has begun a little series about Healthy Celebrations.  Here is the latest post about making whole wheat pie crust.
  • I don’t remember how I landed on this site, but I found a great FREE pattern for making wall totes. I’m not a great seamstress (like my mother), but I think I can make one (or three) of these!
  • I was recently looking for crafty ideas that my kids could tackle for Mother’s Day (for the grandmas), and I found this cute 3×5 recipe card holder How-To.  I’m pretty sure my 8 year old can make one of these.  We’ll find out next week!

And that about wraps it up for me.

Don’t forget to leave a comment today to be entered into the Mozart for the Mother’s Soul giveaway!!

Happy Friday…

Poppa, Barbie and the Pink Potty

Tonight when I got home from work my husband and son were cooking dinner for everyone.  Bill was chopping vegetables and Nick was grilling. That was my first shock of the night. Don’t get me wrong, I knew they both could cook, but to be doing it before I got home without my help….well, I was very surprised and very happy.

My granddaughter Abby heard my voice and came running to greet me. She hugged me and said, “Nana, wait till you see what Poppa got me!”

Poppa doesn’t go shopping often with Abby and when I looked at him he grinned sheepishly. “She’s hard to say ‘No” too,” he said.

Abby took my hand and took me to see what she got. What she got was my second surprise of the night.

doll and potty

It seems Barbie has grown up, had a daughter and is potty training her. I was captivated. Maybe because I have never seen a tiny pink toilet but get this….it really flushes! And there’s more.

open potty

Unbelievable! Even  Barbie’s toilet needs cleaning at my house!

But no! You flush the potty and look what happens!

clean potty

I just couldn’t believe it. I don’t know why it fascinated me so much but I just kept flushing it and flushing it. Back when I had Barbies they didn’t have advanced gadgets and gizmos. I had Barbie, Midge and Skipper and a carrying case for their clothes, but that was it. Anyway, after about ten flushes Abby says, “Nana, can I play with it now?”

Oops, toys are for kids aren’t they?

So after we played awhile we had a delicious supper of two different kinds of grilled meat, grilled veggies, salad, corn, bread and Abby’s favorite, macaroni and cheese. After everyone left the table she asked if she could have some more and I said sure. She grabbed the bowl and ate straight from the bowl.

Later we have a new video to watch. It seems Abby talked Poppa into Alvin and the Chipmunks the Squeakquel.

Another exciting night in the NanaHood! Bring some popcorn and come on over!

Fear of Flying

gratituesdaynov094

Today is Tuesday and I’m giving thanks for several things today.

life-quote-2

I will be 54 years old my next birthday so I am old enough to look back at my journey thus far and say “thank you, God” it’s been an amazing ride so far!  Have I enjoyed every minute of every day of my journey? Probably not as much as I should, but I try. There are days when I have hit pot holes, days when the rains have poured and my soul has been weary, but when those days come I keep the faith because the clouds always part and the sun always shines once more.

pilot

Another thing about being 54 is that I now know how much truth there is in the expression “Time flies,” (which, by the way, it does even if you are NOT having fun).

According to the picture above the good news is that we are the pilot. That’s not good news as far as I am concerned because I have an intense fear of flying.  I don’t know where the phobia came from, but it’s real.  I can make myself get on a plane, but my palms sweat and my stomach churns and I am miserable until we land.  I dislike it so much I would rather have a root canal than to fly (at least the root canal is done on the ground).

While I am a chicken when it comes to flying I am glad that when it comes to my personal journey here on earth that God is my pilot and I’m just a passenger who is enjoying the ride. (as long as I’m on the ground).  You see, there have been times in my life when I flew my own plane and it wasn’t a pleasant experience (and not because I hate flying).  If I hadn’t changed and made God my pilot, I know without a doubt that I would have crashed by now. If that sounds as cheesy as a bumper sticker, so be it. It’s the truth and yes, the truth really does set us free!

I can’t imagine life without his guidance, his love, his forgiveness.

For that I am will always be, forever grateful.

Making Memories Monday…and Crafting With Mema…kinda

It’s been a couple of weeks since I posted a Crafting With Mema segment.  Teresa has started to “vlog” on Mondays for Monday Mingle, and we will actually be moving the Crafting With Mema posts to Wednesdays.   Just an FYI…

But today… there is no vlog… and actually no Crafting with Mema post.  My family and I have been in California WITH Mema for the last few days, and we had INTENDED to craft our little hearts out while we were here.  My mom had a nice list of things to make with the kids, and the kids had expectations of crafting… but somehow the days went by so fast with OTHER activities that our crafting never happened.  Last night on the way home from church, three year old Martha turned around in her seat and said, “MOM, we never crafted with Mema!!!”

It was past bedtime when she said that. And we are supposed to head home this morning.  Oops!

Thankfully Daddy is NOT a Type A personality, so we’ll probably be leaving closer to lunch time.  That means there will be time for one (maybe two) crafting with Mema projects (and yes, even though I tend to grumble about it, there ARE occasions when my husband’s laid back approach to life works to our advantage).

Anyway, I hope to be back on Wednesday with a new Crafting With Mema segment for you.

In the meantime, I wanted to tell you about another fun Monday Bloggy “thing”.  My friend Jennifer has started a new blog carnival entitled Making Memories Monday.   It’s the type of carnival I’m going to enjoy participating in, and I know you will to.  If you have a blog and want to write a post about Making Memories with your kids or grandkids, head on over and join in!  If you DON’T have a blog, but like making memories with your kids or grandkids, head on over and read the posts and join in!  Here is today’s Making Memories Monday post.

And speaking of memories – even though we didn’t do a lot of crafting while we were here, my kids are going to remember this trip.  The days were jam-packed, mostly with activities that surrounded them and their interests… with a little of Mom and Dad’s interests thrown in.

When we travel to see my folks, it’s a ten or eleven hour trip and we’re riding in a little Jetta with the kids crammed in to the back seat, three across, but our kids always do fabulously.  We don’t have a lot of room for extra STUFF, and I’m always happily surprised by how well kids can do with just one or two little happy meal toys and an imagination.  Gas station bathrooms are an adventure to them (and to mommy too!), and we enjoy seeing nature in a different way.  (California countryside is a LOT different than the Nevada desert!)  It was kind of a “new” experience for Martha, because she was old enough to really take it all in.  In fact this whole trip to my folks was a “new” experience for Martha.  The last time she was here, she was barely walking.  So, the entire weekend was full of, “Mommy, does Mema have a BATHROOM?”  Mommy, where does Mema SLEEP?”  “WOW, what is THAT??” (in reference to Mema’s back porch).  Her three year old self was pretty amazed at Mema’s HOUSE.

Besides the ride over, we managed to fit in the following memory-making activities:

  • a cemetary visit (which probably sounds not-s0-fun, but the kids like hunting for markers with Daddy)
  • driving over the Bay Bridge to San Francisco
  • a trip to the Exploratorium in San Francisco.  If you are ever in northern CA, this is definitely a place to try and visit.
  • a walk around the Golden Gate park while laughing at and talking to many, many ducks in the pond
  • a drive over the Golden Gate bridge
  • a trip to McDonalds and 2 hours in the play place there
  • breakfast at IHOP with smiley face pancakes
  • a visit to the cousins house to play with THEIR toys
  • a matinee at the movie theater – How To Train Your Dragon – BIG hit with all the kids, except Martha who slept through it
  • a trip to the “castle park” (which is a really cool park in town where my folks live)
  • a fun dinner at church with the cousins, and some basketball playing time in the church gym
  • and lots and lots of playtime outside at Mema and Papa’s house with all THEIR toys

Yes, I am tired, and rather glad to be making the LONG drive home today.

The kids… they don’t really want to leave, but they are being consoled by the fact that we’ll be coming back in four months.

Oh, and the fact that we will get to do at least ONE Crafting With Mema project before we go.  Speaking of that, I need to go grab the camera …

Happy Monday, everyone!

Sunday Morning Stillness

It’s Sunday morning and my house is totally silent.  That doesn’t happen often and so this morning I am gazing out my window at the glorious green of spring, the bright sunshine, and all of God’s creation with a sense of awe and wonder at His power. May you be blessed this day and may you find some moments of stillness to contemplate your blessings.
