There is no place like home and no bed like your own bed!

I don’t travel often, but when I do I am always quickly reminded of how much I enjoy sleeping in my own bed. A couple of years ago we bought a Tempur-Pedic mattress and if I had known how much I would love it I would have bought it years ago. Anyway, I went out of town last night and stayed at a nice hotel, but the bed just wasn’t MY bed and I didn’t sleep well.  Talk about spoiled!  Remember the scene in The Blind Side where Sandra Bullock shows Mike his new room and he says “Wow, I’ve never had one of these before.”  She responds, “What? A room of your own?” And he says softly, “No, a bed.”

I know that there are many, many people here in our country and in others who do not have a soft, warm, comfortable place to sleep and so I feel guilty for even complaining a teeny-tiny bit about not sleeping well in a bed that was more than sufficient. But it’s true, there is no bed like your own bed and I am really looking forward to sleeping in mine tonight!

This past Sunday….

We ate at my brother’s house and I have to give my sister-in-law credit for being the most fearless entertainer of the year. The woman cooked enough food (my brother helped) to feed an army and invited enough teenage boys (it was my nephew’s birthday) that the house was packed.

While we were at my brother’s house my nephew, Price (the birthday boy) showed me a video that he and his friends put together.  It’s a group of them doing basketball trick shots and it’s absolutely awesome.  My nephew is the blonde with the blue shirt. It illustrates how imaginative teenagers are and also how much time these boys have on their hands! If you have a few minutes watch and enjoy!

Sing and Be Happy

Yesterday’s post about the Mennonite family who lost nine family members in a tragic car accident and the recording of their beautiful voices singing, got me to thinking about what a blessing music is and how grateful I am that I can hear it. When Bill and I first got married we lived in Lexington and I volunteered at the school for the deaf. I worked with little children with varying degrees of hearing impairment. It didn’t take me long to realize that hearing is one of those blessings that I often take for granted.

My husband is musically gifted. Hand him an instrument and he will figure out how to play it. He’s best at the guitar and piano. We have a piano in the room next to our kitchen and I love cooking while listening to Bill play. Every other weekend he plays with some friends in a small band and it’s a great stress reliever.

Music is a universal language. It touches our hearts. It lifts our spirits. It creates a mood and tells a story.

How does music bring joy to your life?

Crafting…er, Cooking With Mema – making Monkey Bread

Welcome back for our Monday series here at NanaHood, called “Crafting With Mema“.  These posts include patterns, recipes, and fun craft projects to do with your kids or grandkids.  The ideas aren’t difficult (if anything, we err on the side of SUPER EASY), and we hope we’ll inspire YOU to do more crafting!

Today I have something a little different for you.  When my mother (a.k.a Mema) was in town we spent three days filming videos for this series.  On the third day, I LEFT my kids with Mema, and my husband and I went for a much-needed 24 hour retreat.

Obviously this meant that I couldn’t film any more videos of the kids crafting with Mema… but do you think this stopped her from crafting?  NO!  They cooked, they created, they crafted… and she took pictures all along the way.  So, for the next few weeks, we’ll have photos instead of videos!

(And be assured that we’re heading to CA to see Mema in just a few weeks, where we plan to create several new videos!)

Today is also different because it’s not exactly crafting with Mema, as much as it is COOKING with Mema.  (And I’m sure bakers and chefs alike would tell me that cooking IS a craft, so I think we can still do this, right?)

The kids and Mema made some fabulous Monkey Bread.  Here is the recipe, and I’ll post the photos below with a little commentary:

MONKEY BREAD

  • 4 cans of instant biscuits
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cinnamon
  • one stick of butter
  • nuts (walnuts or pecans) if you want them.
  • bundt pan

Spray or butter your bundt pan.  Sprinkle nuts (if you are using them) in the greased pan.

Open the cans of un-cooked biscuits and cut each biscuit into fourths.

Mix the sugar and cinnamon together, and pour enough into a smaller bowl to coat all the biscuit pieces.  Roll the biscuit pieces in the sugar/cinnamon mixture and completely coat them.  Place (or if you are three years old, THROW) the pieces into the bundt pan.

When all the pieces are coated and in the bundt pan, melt the stick of butter and dissolve the remainder of the sugar/cinnamon mixture in it, making a very, very yummy (and not so healthy) “syrup/glaze”.  Pour the glaze over the biscuit pieces in the bundt pan.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.   Remove from oven, and place a plate over your bundt pan.  Flip the bundt pan and remove your Monkey Bread.  Wash the bundt pan RIGHT AWAY.  (Experience talking here).

Wait as long as you can before eating the Monkey Bread.  Have the cold water running and ready when you burn your fingers because you couldn’t wait long enough!

Happy crafting (and cooking… and EATING)!!

Don’t forget… if you and your children/grandchildren create something from one of our Crafting posts, we’d LOVE to see photos (or videos).  Along those same lines, we are also interested in posting YOUR video or photo tutorials, so if you have crafty kiddos and want to share, please send an email to admin@nanahood.com.

9 Members of Small Community Killed in Crash

Perhaps you have heard of the horrific crash that killed 11 people last week on I 65 in Kentucky.  Nine of the people killed were from the Esh family. They lived in a small community called Marrowbone, just down the road a few miles from where I live.  I have driven past their house many times and even stopped to talk them about the vinyl storage buildings they sold. Their deaths have left a huge hole in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.

The accident happened Friday when the tractor-trailer Ken Laymon (he was also killed) was driving crossed the divider and slammed into a 15-passenger van. John and Sadie Esh died in the crash, along with their three daughters, Rose, Anna and Rachel, and son, Leroy. Leroy Esh’s wife, Naomi, and 2-month-old son Jalen were also killed in the crash, but sons Johnny and Josiah survived (they were strapped in car seats). Rachel Esh’s fiance, Joel Gingrich, and family friend Ashley Kramer were also killed.

The victims of the crash all belonged to the Mennonite community in Marrowbone and all were active members of the Marrowbone Christian Brotherhood Church. Hundreds of members of the  Mennonite community are expected to arrive from across the country for the service.

The Esh family were not strangers to tragedy. They had already lost a son (he was killed while on a mission trip in a snowmobile accident) and their house had burned. They rebuilt the house and were on their way to a wedding when they were killed.

The Esh family were gifted singers and one of their friends recorded them singing a song they had written. It is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and in light of their untimely deaths, it is a testament to their faith. I don’t think anyone who listens to it will go unmoved.

Please keep the family and friends of all those killed in this horrible crash in your prayers.

Way to go gals!

And from one of our readers….

This is in response to the Making Some Memories post earlier in the week.

Some of our best family memories are from “family hikes”…whatever the season, we just all strike out in some direction on the farm and ‘go with the flow’…it might involve skipping rocks on the pond, picking up hickory nuts, pictures of scenery or hijinks by the children, or just good ‘fellowship’.  But one Christmas holiday, we came upon a grapevine in the woods, and it led to all kinds of risky behavior by young and old (and the “old” dads were the riskiest!!)–swinging on the grapevine, ‘riding down’ small saplings nearby, and tree-climbing.  They will never forget the fun of this hike, nor or many others, such as the one involving a 6 foot black snake……..
